New Jersey band Good Teal released their debut Good Teal EP on August 15, 2025. The eight-track project was self-recorded and produced by the band before being mastered by Matt Filipek. Built on the foundation of hardcore, the EP also pulls from alternative and garage rock, creating an intense and eclectic sound that mixes aggression with experimentation.
Fronting the band is vocalist, bassist, and main songwriter Reg Mason, who explains the meaning behind the group’s name: “The titular ‘Teal’ in our name represents calcified stress. The aged issues that we face but never address or get proper relief from… Teal is what you’re facing that most don’t see. This band is a vessel for that teal to be extracted and let out.”
Mason connects the band’s ethos to the cathartic nature of hardcore shows, where collective movement helps dissolve hidden stress. “That kinetic energy brings heat and through that heat, the problems or ‘teal’ melt away and you have catharsis,” he says. The EP’s cover art mirrors this idea, featuring teal faces against a blood-orange backdrop, melting together in a vision of community release.
The songs themselves reflect Mason’s own experiences, addressing subjects like out-of-state heartbreak on “Parasites,” hyper-independence on “Lookout,” parental struggle and loss of potential on “Spouse,” rejecting cycles of abuse on “Excusing the Hurt,” and self-motivation on “Freefall.” Other tracks include “Bittersweet,” which looks at the limits of personal significance, and “Good Teal,” which celebrates the strength of chosen family.
Mason notes that this project represents his first time capturing these themes on record. “This EP is me exploring through my personal assembly of that stress for the first time on record,” he explains.
Good Teal is made up of Reg Mason (vocals and bass), Shane Stanton (drums), Curt Grayson (rhythm guitar and keyboards), and Alex Goldenthal (guitar). Together, they channel hardcore intensity through a personal and reflective lens, crafting a debut that aims to leave a strong impression.
