Acclaimed songwriter and multi‑instrumentalist Duncan Lloyd has released his sixth solo album, Unwound, via Scotland’s Reveal Records. Known for his work with art‑rock mainstays Maximo Park and half of the duo Nano Kino, Lloyd ventures into his darkest and most ambitious territory yet with this 12‑track collection, available now on digital platforms and CD.
Written during a turbulent personal chapter, Unwound acts as sonic therapy — a record born from coping and catharsis. Lloyd’s approach is expansive yet intimate, blending post‑punk edge with hypnotic rhythms and spacious arrangements. The result is an album that moves between grit and melody, inviting listeners not just to observe, but to step inside its rooms.
Lloyd describes each track as occupying its own “room,” inspired partly by Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. This concept manifests in shifting textures and moods — some tracks erupt with jagged guitars and heavy percussion, while others retreat into restrained, atmospheric passages. Across the album, dynamics and space become as important as melody, creating an almost cinematic experience.
Songs like “Laugh So Loud” and “Rituals” — released ahead of the album — offer snapshots of this range: circular motifs, radio‑like vocal intimacy, and lyrics steeped in habit, healing, and human fragility. Closing track “A World Away Now” leaves listeners with a poignant meditation on missed connections and quiet longing.
Recorded between Analogue Catalogue Studios in Ireland and Lloyd’s home base in Newcastle, Unwound features contributions from longtime collaborators, including Maximo Park bandmates Jemma Freese and Tom English, alongside Andrew Mills and Joe Boyer. The result is a collective energy that feels raw yet deliberate, alive in its imperfections.
