Irish musician Michael Smyth has returned with his new solo project, Silk, and a brand new single titled but then, yes. Best known as the guitarist and songwriter for the band Virgins, Smyth now explores a heavier and more textured sound with Silk—leaning fully into the dense, emotional side of shoegaze.
Following the release of his debut single Faze, but then, yes takes the sound even further. The track blends thick layers of distortion with lighter, dreamy moments, creating a wide, immersive atmosphere. Heavy fuzz builds slowly into a powerful climax, but the song also gives space to breathe, moving between loud and quiet in a way that feels natural and hypnotic.
The song features guest vocals from AJ Das of Dublin band Picture Postcard, adding another layer to the mood. The lyrics focus on the shift in human relationships—how a friendship can slowly turn into something more romantic and meaningful. It captures that change in feeling with both intensity and care.
Smyth wrote, performed, and recorded the song himself. For mixing, he teamed up with Jonny Woods of 1980 Something Studios. The track was then mastered by Jon Moorehead of Moosetronix. Together, they gave the track its sharp edge and wide dynamic range, letting each part of the sound shine without taking away from its deep, layered feel.
Speaking about the project, Michael says, “I constantly feel like I am rushing towards the inevitable infinite oblivion... so it’s important that I fill the time remaining with joyous, creative acts.” For him, Silk is a way to make something meaningful and to share ideas through music.
The single is released ahead of Silk’s first live shows. The live band will feature members from other Irish acts, including Broncos, Ferals, and Wynona Bleach.
