Asbury Park’s Yawn Mower are back with their sophomore LP on Mint 400 Records this Summer. I Just Can’t Wait To Die will be released on August 15, and the New Jersey band, who formed in 2015, has built a strong name in the local music scene of Asbury Park, NJ. Over the years, they’ve opened for bands like Mannequin Pussy, Oso Oso, and Hot Snakes. Their 2022 debut, To Each Their Own Coat, was well received, and this new album shows how much they’ve grown.
The band just shared the first single, “Rascal.” The song is loud, funny, and honest. Guitarist and singer Mike Chick says it’s partly about the kids in their lives—nieces, nephews, and the children of friends. The lyrics might make parents laugh, but the song also talks about growing up and returning home. The chorus—“Go ‘head and run until you get back home”—keeps that feeling front and center. The music video for “Rascal” even stars some of their favorite “lil rascals.” You can stream the song now and watch the video on YouTube.
The band started writing I Just Can’t Wait To Die after playing the Sea.Hear.Now festival in their hometown. Chick says that after such a big show, they wanted to write music that would feel exciting on large stages. You can hear that energy in the new songs.
Everything on the album was made by the band themselves, except the drums, which were recorded by their friend Evan Bernard. They produced, mixed, and mastered the rest without outside help. Chick says their goal was to make something raw and real—loud rock music with a personal feel.
This album is also the most group-focused work Yawn Mower has done. It wasn't long ago the band was just the duo of Mike Chick & Biff Swenson but have added the firepower of Dana Yurcisin of Dana Why & many more, Rudy Meier of Bristler & many more, plus violin virtuoso Nicole Scarsone. The result is a tight, creative album that reflects each member’s voice.
