Australian hardcore titans SPEED are back with a bang, dropping their new single and music video, "THE FIRST TEST," from their highly anticipated debut full-length, ONLY ONE MODE, slated for release on July 12th via Flatspot Records (USA) and Last Ride Records (AUS). Following the raw energy of “REAL LIFE LOVE,” this latest track is a sonic powerhouse that showcases the band's dynamic range. With groove-laden riffs, punctuated by held notes and an unexpected yet poignant flute break from vocalist Jem Siow, “THE FIRST TEST” is a testament to SPEED's inventive approach within the hardcore scene.
The single’s lyrics delve into the journey of self-discovery and identity, particularly from the perspective of marginalized individuals. Siow, reflecting on his experience as an Asian-born Australian, channels these themes into a narrative that balances the harsh realities and inherent beauty of personal growth. The accompanying music video, produced by SPEED alongside Jack Rudder and Thomas Elliot, juxtaposes scenes of intense parking lot moshing with a visceral band performance, capturing the raw energy that SPEED brings to their live shows.
Currently tearing through a six-week North American tour with hardcore heavyweights Knocked Loose, Show Me The Body, and Loathe, SPEED is poised to take their sound to new heights. Following their North American stint, the band will head to Europe for a series of shows and major festival appearances, including stops at Download, Hellfest, and Flatspot World. They will return stateside for their record release show on July 12th at Los Angeles' Belasco Theatre, followed by supporting slots at two highly anticipated Have Heart reunion shows.
SPEED’s ascent in the hardcore world has been meteoric since their formation in 2019. The Sydney-based quintet—comprising brothers Jem (vocals) and Aaron Siow (bass), guitarists Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon—has built a reputation for their explosive live performances and staunch DIY ethos. Their collaboration with longtime producer Elliott Gallart and videographer Jack Rudder has helped carve out a distinct niche within the genre.
The release of their 2021 single “We See U” marked a breakthrough, amassing over a million streams and setting the stage for their critically acclaimed 2022 EP, Gang Called Speed. This release saw the band touring globally, from North America to Southeast Asia, capturing the hearts of hardcore fans worldwide.
