Band: Grave Danger

Genre: ‘Ska-Goth’, Punk
What the band says they sound like: “a big, menacing sound, worthy of the Lovecraftian horror that inspired it, to balance out the fun, bouncy horn parts that we love to write.” Strongly influenced by Reel Big Fish and Misfits.
What we think they sound like: On new single “Wake The Dead”, Grave Danger combine classic ska horns and bouncing guitars with some spooky lyrics. Their fast-paced rhythms are accentuated by lead singer Chris Marcanti’s vocals, which alternate from a sweet melodic pop delivery to a deep growl sure to please anyone who feels Halloween came and went too fast this year. Fans of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones will enjoy this one.

Band: EF

Genre: Indie rock, post-rock
What the band says they sound like: “Combining the indie rock mannerisms of Explosions In The Way with the hardcore attitude of Mogwai and the orchestral approach of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.”
What we think they sound like: Chamber-pop touches of strings and horns round out the inventive, mostly instrumental “Hymn Of…”. It’s a daring step forward in the band’s long career, which kicked off in 2006 with their debut full-length, Give Me Beauty... Or Give Me Death!. EF has long since established themselves as a unique voice in rock, with influences spanning indie rock and hardcore subgenres. The new track serves as a great starting point for new listeners as well as an exciting new chapter for the group.

Band: Havanna Winter

What the band says they sound like: Bebe Rexha, Noah Cyrus
What we think they sound like: Norwegian-born Havanna Winter’s soft vocals lead this dreamy pop track, helmed by DJ and producer Maya K. The repetitive structure of the song recalls pop hits of the early 2000s, cloaked in a 1950s aesthetic in her visuals. Winter’s minor-key vocal turns, fun hooks, and angelic backing vocals are on par with contemporaries Lana del Rey and Bella Poarch.

Band: Bring The Hoax

Genre: Indie Rock, Grunge
What the band says they sound like: “…the band members take their influences from the finishing decades of the 20th century. You can hear hints of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Built to Spill and Smashing Pumpkins to name some.”
What we think they sound like: Bring The Hoax bring radio-ready rock on their eponymous debut EP, sure to please mainstream rock fans and lovers of more obscure sounds alike. Fuzzy guitars and pounding, echoey drums bring a grungy, 90s-throwback energy to the five-song set, largely recorded and produced by the band themselves. Their trademark shouted hooks and power chords add to their charm; Bring The Hoax is sure to find them fans far and wide.

Band: The Paranoias

What the band says they sound like: “mixing Latin ska fusion, R&B, reggae, soul, jazz, punk and hints of electronic”
What we think they sound like: Here’s one for all the Latin rock lovers. The Paranoias are back with a groovy, bilingual new single that sounds like a mix of Chicano Batman and Little Jesus, though altogether original. Singer Ralf Velazquez slips between ingles y español in the blink of an eye over fabulous horns, jangly indie-rock guitars and rhythmic cymbals. What the band says they sound like: Broken Social Scene, No Age
What we think they sound like: Frontman Drew Thomson takes the wheel on Canadian punks Single Mothers’ first new LP since 2018, handling virtually all of the songwriting duties on their new offering. Their noisy, straightforward punk sound is fiery and evocative, but beneath the surface is a reflection on midlife and the chaos of the world around us, particularly as the pandemic enters a new phase. Check out their latest single “Nausea” and accompanying music video below.

Band: Suzie Chism

What the band says they sound like: Big Thief, QOTSA, Lana Del Rey, No Doubt
What we think they sound like: Written in response to a nasty breakup, Suzie Chism serves up country-tinged rocker “I Get Down” off of her latest album Pobrecita, out on November 11th. Her slightly nasal falsetto vaguely recalls Angel Olsen. It’s a fun kiss-off that the singer-songwriter and producer describes as a “party anthem for sad girls”. It’s sure to get anyone on the mend from a broken heart fired up and shouting along.
