WHAT'S BEEN IN OUR INBOX! RICKY, ALIVENIQUE, ELK CITY, LOST IN KIEV, LIES

Our inbox is over flowing again so we are letting you good people know exactly what is new and available out there in the music world. What weird journey we go on today from the mainstream to the corners of the underground. I have to say this week a couple tracks really peaked our interest with their very original sounding music in this day and age, Ricky and LIES really blew us away. Everything else wasn't too bad either, so make sure to add these new tracks to your current playlist! If you want to see your band on one of these lists, send us streaming music and as short bio.

BAND: RICKY

BloodMakesNoise Rating: 9.7/10

Genre: Indie Pop, Indie Rock

What the band says they sound like: Ricky brings a blend of indie rock, dream pop and alternative that feels fresh and familiar.

What we think they sound like:  It's not often, probably every 100 emails we look through we get something that is actually made by an artist concerned with trying to be original and different. This new track by Ricky and the video just has such a unique vibe. At moments it's poppy like The New Pornographers but mixed with a little Beck, Flaming Lips, Killers, and more. It's just like all encompassing of many sonic textures and creates a wide musical palette. I really enjoyed this track, the production is stellar as well.

BAND:  ALIVENIQUE

BloodMakesNoise Rating:  8.5/10

Genre:  World Beat Cinematic Indie Pop

What the band says they sound like:  "meta-pop-art musical project", Alivenique delves into her unique take on artistic vanguardism, hyper mixing a vast sonic and visual sensual assault, digging into cinematic narratives alongside post-genre feminine meme-able moments, yet deeply underneath translating a pluralist sincerest invitation.

What we think they sound like:  We definitely don't get music like this usually. It's like if Jon Brion was making the music for a latino themed Beyonce type project. Although the project online is labeled more of a "world beat" based project it does have rhythms in line with South American sounding music. Like if Astrud Gilberto started in 2022 this might be more in line with what she would be doing. This is a little more Brazilian jazz themed with bits of Bossa Nova and Samba woven between modern club beats. For my tastes it leans a little more main stream pop than I usually enjoy, like at moments as much as it's interesting it also sounds like it could be a Shakira song from 20 years ago. But don't think that's a dig at it, like this track below has massive hit potential and it's just good to know the base for it is well thought out.

BAND:  ELK CITY

BloodMakesNoise Rating: 7.4/10

Genre:  Indie Rock

What the band says they sound like: Elk City makes potent atmospheric pop with psychedelic undertones and overtones.

What we think they sound like:  In general I dig the music, down to the Pavement-ish guitar solo, however the lyrics at times strike me as very pretentious. I feel like there are many other phrases that are more potent and relatable than the chorus "Your time doesn't exist" or the opening and repeated line "Time is just a construct". Maybe the enormous amount of name dropping that the press release does also bothers me, like you guys are all professionals, stand on your own merits and songwriting, because it's actually really good. The vocal quality is really good too, it's very Natalie Merchant and adds an interesting facet to the band. I enjoy the old school indie rock vibe of this track where as other tracks like "That Someone" lean a little heavy on the Stevie Nicks influence, but overall from the singles it's enough to get me to check out the album.

BAND:  LOST IN KIEV

BloodMakesNoise Rating: 7.3/10

Genre:  Instrumental, Cinematic, Electronic, Post Rock

What the band says they sound like: a track bridging the gap from delicate electronic post-rock to noisy post-metal, we wanted to transcribe the emergence of a birth until a brutal and chaotic end through a winding and tumultuous life, it's a tribute to all living things on earth.

What we think they sound like:   I really want to love this because it's very well played and it's huge and cinematic. My only issue is that sometimes with instrumental tracks if it's not a groove you are particularly into a 6 minute song becomes daunting. Like I really love Tortoise and other instrumental bands but at moments in this I wish there was more going on. Sometimes this feels like it could easily be a track with vocals and the right vocal would really accentuate what the band is doing. Musically it hits a lot of styles throughout from mellow indie rock to metal all within one song. I'm more of a fan of where the song starts than where it ends up going. However, this is well done for what they are going for.

BAND:  LIES

BloodMakesNoise Rating: 10/10

Genre: Indie Folk, Indie Pop

What the band says they sound like: American Football members and cousins Mike and Nate Kinsella

What we think they sound like:   Well first off if you are expecting to hear something that sounds like American Football, it's not that, this is more in line with Belle and Sebastian. This song is just really nice indie folk with touches of synthesizer pulses in the background to keep it driving. The production is seriously genius, there are so many nice small touches like what appears to be a phantom knock in the verse, a lifting bending synth tone right into a chorus and then ethereal moments between the chorus and verse bring us from point A to point B without even hearing a noticeable transition until we are in the middle of it. Really great tones on top of interesting songwriting and arrangement. The ingenuity of this track blew me away and it still maintained pop sensibilities while messing with structure and feeling. This is really done well.
