This new project between Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell presents a continuation of the dark more cinematic releases of the Dead Can Dance. The single Deshta (Forever) if as the band says is just the first taste of their May album “Burn” due out on London’s Atlantic Curve Label. The song is operatic and if the drum machine was stripped away it would be purely a textured soundtrack piece. The vocals climb scales seen more in middle eastern music than traditional pop which helps it to float above the eerie textures created by Maxwell. The video adds a level of mystery to the song, a black and white piece that focuses on human form and appears to be people buried alive as it then crosses over to clean shrouded figures groping each other. Perhaps to show rebirth not only literally but maybe as this is a new chapter for the band members as well. The idea behind the video as stated by the band is in this post-Covid world the traumatic vision of people touching and breathing deeply. I would say the music shares a lot with trip-hop groups like Portishead but with more operatic less jazz centered vocals. It feels ultra-modern and sleek so for sure we are interested in hearing the rest of what the duo has to offer.
