Dreamy sounds with somewhat lazy but well executed vocals reminiscent of Stephen Malkmus seem to be a critical component to the sound of this record. Distinctive sounds and layered vocal harmonies pervade, keeping the record moving and interesting throughout. The vocal comparison aside, La Palma are their own entity. Song construction is played with in a unique way, with stops and starts and unexpected changes, yet the songs remain catchy and with pristine production. This is the kind of band that should sound pristine. Often bands can sound too clean that need some grit, but La Palma is not that kind of band. I hear a Sparklehorse feel in that regard, production and song construction, and that is a great thing. Clearly this music has been constructed with a great deal of love and creative ability, with the type of detail one would imagine Tom Waits puts into the layers of his songs. Difficult to describe as a whole, my best attempt would be to call this indie pop to some extent, but I must stress again that La Palma are doing their own thing, cannot be constrained by genre labels or put in any specific category. This is a deep, complex record that you can dive into and find different things for different moods, sounds for today and sounds for another day.. Dive in..
