What a way to start your morning by hearing clips of the nightmare that has been the last year in the intro track of the new Tony Appleseed LP. Just hearing Donald Trump’s voice makes you want to inject bleach into your eyeballs. The album starts for real at track 2 with “Ten Ninety –Nines” and its good electro indie pop with a little bit of an Evanescence feel musically and kind of dark mellow brooding vocal. It’s clean and clear, wouldn’t mind some rasp on it as it’s a little bit non-descript. The music completely changes by track 3 into something almost jazzy and feels like it could be something from a Portishead album. I definitely hear an overall NIN influence but it feels broader than that. On “Will the World Be Quiet” the sped-up vocals remind me of 100 Geks. Track 5 “Justice” is a nice track that I think should maybe be earlier on the release, it has a slow groove like some 70’s pop radio hit with some great synth leads. Track 7 “Whirl” sounds like mostly samples but it’s very cool, also another track I think should be near the top of this release, maybe even the lead off track. I like this release but overall it’s a little bit inconsistent with the way the vocals are presented but that’s ok. Most artists need to experiment to figure out what they are best at and there is a lot of good on this album but the wide array of styles make it at times feel like it’s not cohesive as an album and more a collection of singles. I love that this is from NJ though, there’s something in that Asbury water that breeds creativity.
