Otra Vez: Special World

Otra Vez has a unique vocal delivery that fits really well with the indie pop folk style of the band. It’s somewhere between Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips in cadence and tone and Stephen Malkmus of Pavement with its airy nature and free flowing, free caring nature. In a way the interesting chord progressions and dissonant notes, washy backing vocals kind of lend themselves to the comparison of The Flaming Lips and Pavement. At times it also sounds like Wilco performing the music, like if you took alternate songs from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sessions and gave them to a different band to sing over. The duo from Brooklyn do a very cool thing in that they don’t sound like the typical bands from Brooklyn. There are eerie moments, grooving moments, folk moments, indie pop moments, this band at times feel chameleon like. At some points I found myself thinking this is what Jay Reatard might sound like if he did a really chill mellow album. I have to definitely give kudos to any band that you can’t pin down with just a catchall reference. Lots of good stuff going on here and even though it seems like the band tries to be eclectic it always sounds cohesive and every song works under the umbrella of being a solid album.
