Well it’s official, I found one of my new favorite bands. LOVEBYRD from Germany call themselves a “Garage Duo” but I feel like they are far superior to that description. Their new single sounds like Brian Jonestown Massacre with Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star singing. It’s a song that catches you right from the first line where the female vocal states “I wanna die before you do, I want a coffin just for two”. The bands song also has something reminiscent of the Geowulf song “Saltwater” but minus the modern touches. If you told me this was from a 90’s band I’d believe you but there’s something modern about that I can’t put my finger on.
The song is accompanied by a video where we see two female lovers running from the police as one lies dying, bloody in the backseat. I won’t spoil the ending but just like the song the video makes you want to watch until the very end. This band is like one of those hidden gems you used to find in the used bin at your record store. Their name is in a cool font, the band looks cool and then you get it home and put it on your turntable only to find you just found the song that is going to start off every one of your mixtapes for a long time to come.
