BMN INDIE SPOTLIGHT: V-DAY PLAYLIST By Olivia King

Hi my name is Olivia! I’m an avid indie music listener and I’m always searching for something new and different.

Melt into this love struck playlist composed of songs that make Valentine’s day less boring– especially for all the singlets out there. Songs about innocent crushest to undying romance, the titles themselves reveal their amorous musical themes.

A personal favorite is Mako Road’s track “Lady” that introduces the song with hypnotic guitar chords that seamlessly fade into Rhian Ward’s smooth vocals. The song can be described as a peaceful trance, as it is reminiscent of the feelings one gets around a lover they adore. It captures the simplicity of being in love and reveals the singer's affection towards another woman. Another personal favorite, You are the Right One, by the alternative australian band Sports creates a similar feel with their mesmerizing blends of indie, r & b, and a touch of psychedelic drones. This lofi track is a reminder of the positive feelings that come with crushing on another individual, which is highlighted with the use of cheery percussions and transient guitar reverb.

Tracks three and five share a classic indie sound that is upbeat and vibrant. For those yearning to be with a lover, these two songs are worth a listen; indie duo Her’s reminisces about a deep yearning for a past romantic interest. Fitzpatrick’s infatuation with his former lover is a story that any listener will become head over heels for. Singer/songwriter Molly Rankin sings about her strong desire to be close to one she is fond of, where she makes herself out to be a secret admirer. Creepy yet charming, her soft, elongated voice ties well with her lyrics about her eagerness to fall in love and will leave you even more enamored with your current object of affection.

The rest of the tracks are dreamy, romantic getaways, which starts off strong with Beach House’s iconic Beyond Love, and for those that are tired of the whole love thing, finishing off the playlist is an-anti valentines day song entitled “Drag” by indie soloist Daywave. His sound is rather dim and sorrowful, but the track is perfect for those who want to avoid indulging in romantic buffoonery.
