Montreal singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alanna Sterling has released “Down,” an energetic indie pop-rock single inspired by a real-life moment of unexpected hardship.
Montreal-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alanna Sterling has released their latest single, “Down,” an upbeat indie pop-rock track that turns a difficult personal experience into an empowering message about resilience and moving forward. Accompanied by an official music video, the release continues Sterling's hands-on approach to songwriting, production, and performance.
“Down” was inspired by an unexpected setback while Sterling was traveling. Stranded with a dead phone, no money, and no way to contact friends, they spent time busking outside a shopping plaza with only a skateboard and guitar before being forced to stop by police. After finally charging their phone and reconnecting with friends, Sterling wrote the entire song in just 15 minutes while waiting to be picked up.
Rather than focusing on frustration, “Down” transforms that stressful moment into an uplifting anthem. Bright guitars, energetic rhythms, and expressive vocals reflect the determination to keep moving even when life feels uncertain. The song balances emotional honesty with optimism, encouraging listeners to find strength during difficult moments.
The official music video expands on the song's themes while embracing a playful skater-inspired style. Filmed along the California coast, the visual features scenes of freedom, rebellion, and personal renewal. It also introduces a mysterious “maiden of the mist” character, representing support and hope during times when getting back on your feet feels impossible.
The video was created alongside longtime collaborators Courtney and Ashley, friends Sterling first met through the streaming platform Twitch. Funding for the project came directly from fans during an anniversary Twitch marathon, highlighting the strong connection Sterling has built with their online community.
Originally from Ottawa and now based in Montreal, Alanna Sterling writes, co-produces, and performs the instrumentation on their music, reflecting a deeply independent creative process. In 2025, they were named Songwriter and Solo Artist of the Year at the OMIC Awards and have continued building an international audience through their Twitch channel, MermaidUnicorn.
Following a six-week residency representing Canadian music during the 2024 Olympics in Paris and the success of previous releases, Alanna Sterling continues to establish a unique voice within Canada's independent music scene. With “Down,” they show how moments of uncertainty can become the starting point for confidence, growth, and creative inspiration.
