Portland dark-alternative trio DARKSWOON return with Antivenom, a dense and emotional new album blending darkwave, shoegaze, and post-punk into a haunting meditation on anxiety, loss, and survival.
Portland dark-alternative band DARKSWOON have officially released their new full-length album Antivenom, a heavy and atmospheric record that pushes the trio deeper into the worlds of darkwave, post-punk, and shoegaze. Built around layered electronics, shadowy guitars, and emotionally exposed songwriting, the album continues the band’s steady evolution while sharpening their identity into something more focused and immersive.
Across Antivenom, DARKSWOON confront themes of fear, grief, anxiety, and inequality with directness and emotional weight. Rather than treating the songs as separate pieces, the album unfolds like a continuous emotional landscape filled with unresolved tension and lingering unease. The lyrics move through confession, reflection, and quiet desperation while still holding onto moments of resilience underneath the darkness.
Originally formed in 2014 as a solo project by vocalist and guitarist Jana Cushman, DARKSWOON eventually expanded into a trio with the addition of Rachel Ellis on synths, keys, and beats alongside bassist Norah Lynn. Together, the group has developed a sound that balances cold electronic textures with deeply human emotion. Antivenom continues that balance, combining mechanical rhythms and dense production with intimate vocals and melodic basslines that keep the songs grounded emotionally.
Musically, the album leans further into expansive shoegaze territory while maintaining the band’s post-punk backbone. Waves of synths and effects create a dreamlike atmosphere, but the songs still carry urgency through driving rhythms and sharp emotional contrast. The result feels both hypnotic and tense, like wandering through neon-lit streets long after midnight while thoughts refuse to quiet down.
Over the years, DARKSWOON have become a notable presence within the Pacific Northwest dark music scene through both their recordings and immersive live performances. Earlier releases like Bloom//Decay helped expand the band’s audience, but Antivenom feels like a defining statement for the trio’s current era.
Fans of Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and Slowdive will likely connect with DARKSWOON’s mix of emotional intensity and dense atmosphere. With Antivenom, the band delivers a record that feels heavy, immersive, and deeply human.
