Charlotte artist Nic Pugh blends indie electronic pop with retro glam and sharp social themes
Midniter, the solo project of Charlotte, North Carolina artist Nic Pugh, returns with a new single and video titled “Sugar Man,” released February 10, 2026 via SugarTank! Records. The track pushes his synth-driven indie pop into a more theatrical and glam-inspired direction, pairing bright hooks with darker subject matter.
“Sugar Man” centers on a stylized character that represents addiction in many forms. Rather than focusing on one vice, the song expands its scope to include substances, technology, and modern consumption habits. The result is a concept that frames addiction as something widely accepted and even encouraged, wrapped in appealing packaging.
Musically, the track blends shimmering synths with gritty guitar textures, drawing from both indie electronic and retro glam rock influences. There is a clear nod to early ’70s UK glam in the tone and structure, while elements of psychedelic pop shape the more colorful and surreal moments. The production moves between tight, rhythmic sections and looser, more unstable passages, giving the song a shifting, almost disorienting feel.
The accompanying video leans fully into that aesthetic. Directed by Paul Juan, it presents a bright, exaggerated visual world filled with bold color, stylized performance, and playful but unsettling imagery. Pugh appears in a transformed role, embodying the central figure of the song with a mix of charm and menace. The visual tone reinforces the track’s core idea: something attractive on the surface that carries a deeper, more corrosive edge.
Pugh’s background adds context to the shift in sound. After nearly two decades in punk and rock bands, including Paint Fumes and Jaggermouth, Midniter was created as a move away from guitar-focused music. Since launching the project in 2024, he has drawn from a wide range of electronic and indie influences, shaping a sound that balances melody with atmosphere.
Alongside his solo work, Pugh co-founded SugarTank! Records, an independent label focused on supporting LGBTQ+ artists and collaborators. That ethos carries into Midniter, which often blends personal themes with broader cultural commentary.
With “Sugar Man,” Midniter sharpens both his sonic identity and thematic focus, delivering a track that is as catchy as it is pointed.
