Cathedrale Unleashes Urgent New Single "South Life" and 5th LP!

French post-punk band Cathedrale has released their latest single, "South Life," from their upcoming album Poison. The album, their fifth, arrived on February 14, 2025, through Howlin’ Banana Records and Regarts.

Recorded live at Chez Nini Studio in Brussels with producer Mathieu Versini, "South Life" captures the frustration of daily life on the Toulouse ring road. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of endless traffic jams, impatient drivers, and the added chaos of rainy days. While the song is laced with humor, it also reflects a deeper struggle—the urge to escape city life’s stress while fearing the isolation that can come with leaving. The track is fast-paced and tense, matching the anxiety of being stuck in a seemingly endless loop of congestion and restlessness.

Cathedrale’s sound has evolved over the years, incorporating sharp guitar work and, more recently, synth textures that add depth to their compositions. They are no longer strictly garage rock or power pop, but their post-punk foundation remains strong. Their ability to balance raw energy with atmospheric tension is especially evident in "South Life."

The band’s creative process for Poison was loose and organic. As they recall, some writing sessions were spent simply talking or having a drink, while others led to intense bursts of inspiration. For "South Life," guitarist and vocalist Jules arrived particularly frustrated after witnessing a day of reckless driving in Toulouse, and that agitation translated directly into the song’s urgent, driving sound.

Over the years, Cathedrale has built a strong reputation within the French independent music scene. Having toured with acts like Osees, Frustration, and Rendez-Vous, they have proven their ability to deliver both on record and on stage. Poison continues their evolution, with a darker, more introspective approach than past releases.

"South Life" is a sharp and engaging track that captures modern frustration in a way that feels both personal and universal. For fans of bands like High Vis, Institute, and Protomartyr, Cathedrale offers a compelling take on post-punk, mixing urgency with a subtle but ever-present sense of unease. Their music doesn’t just reflect their environment—it challenges it.
