Reggae-punk supergroup The Kilograms have made a strong impression since forming in 2024. Featuring members of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Bouncing Souls, and Newport Secret Six, the band quickly built momentum with a self-titled EP and a two-song single. Now, they’re ready to take the next step with their debut full-length album, Beliefs & Thieves, out April 4 via Rad Girlfriend Records and their own Weights and Measures label.
The album was recorded by Pete Steinkopf of The Bouncing Souls and mixed by Paul Kolderie, known for his work with Pixies, Radiohead, and Morphine. It promises to capture the raw energy and tight musicianship the band has already displayed on the road. “It’s been a cool time playing with these guys,” says bassist Joe Gittleman. “Beliefs & Thieves to me is like the scrapbook of our first year together as a band. It’s all in there.”
The title track, “Beliefs & Thieves,” is streaming now on all digital platforms. Fans can also preorder the album ahead of its release. The Kilograms will be supporting the record with a West Coast tour alongside Big D and the Kids Table and Omnigone, followed by a major Boston show with Dropkick Murphys and The Menzingers.
While The Kilograms bring together veterans from ska, punk, and reggae, they aren’t relying on their past to define them. Their sound is a blend of gritty, groove-heavy rhythms with the sharp energy of punk and the melodic pull of classic ska. Gittleman’s bass work adds a deep foundation, while drummer Michael McDermott’s tight beats drive the band’s infectious pulse. Vocalist Sammy Kay brings a soulful delivery that gives the songs both weight and warmth, backed by the layered textures of guitarist J Duckworth and keyboardist Craig Gorsline.
Beliefs & Thieves combines the sharp political edge of The Clash, the driving horn-infused punk of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, the smooth, danceable grooves of The Pietasters, and the raw, roots-reggae grit of The Aggrolites, creating a sound that feels both familiar and fresh. The Kilograms balance sharp, socially aware songwriting with dynamic, danceable arrangements, keeping the spirit of ska-punk alive while pushing it forward. This album is a must-hear for anyone who loves energetic, heartfelt music with substance.
