Kansas City band RxGhost has just dropped a new video for their song "Candles" from their latest album, 'Scaffolding.' The band blends shoegaze with Dangerpop, creating a sound that’s both rich and intense.
The song "Candles" explores themes of struggle and persistence. According to frontman Josh Thomas, the track reflects the challenges of trying to make a difference in a world where the wealthy hold most of the power. He explains that despite the system being skewed in favor of the rich, it's crucial to keep striving for change and doing interesting things. The song uses the metaphor of tea candles floating on an ocean, symbolizing how fragile life can be. Even though the world might seem unfair, Thomas encourages people to make the most of their time.
Matthew Dunehoo, the video’s director, explains that the video builds on this candle metaphor. It shows the difficulty of staying strong and focused while dealing with personal struggles. The visual story features DELARAY!, an up-and-coming hyperpop artist, who portrays a character dealing with anxiety and the challenges of job hunting. The video ends with a hopeful image of planes taking off from LAX, suggesting a possible escape from everyday troubles.
RxGhost is led by Josh Thomas, known from his previous bands High Diving Ponies and Spidermums. This new project features drummer Justin Brooks, guitarist James Capps, bassist Chris Smead, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah James. The band’s music has evolved, showcasing a cleaner and more dynamic sound than Thomas’s earlier work.
Thomas's journey to forming RxGhost is remarkable. After struggling with addiction and a tough job, he found clarity and renewed focus during rehab. His time in treatment helped him rediscover his love for music, leading to the creation of RxGhost. The band is now recording new material, aiming to expand on their distinctive shoegaze and Dangerpop style. Thomas feels more excited and in control than ever before, ready to bring fresh energy to his music.
The shoegaze/Dangerpop blend of RxGhost offers a compelling mix of dreamy textures and raw emotion, with their Midwestern roots adding a unique layer of resilience and introspection to their sound. Check out the video below!
