Webb Chapel Announce New Album "World Cup" Out September 6 on Strange Mono Records

Fans of EVOL-era Sonic Youth, Sun Organ, and The Heat, listen up! Philadelphia's Webb Chapel is back with a new album, "World Cup," set to release on September 6 through Strange Mono Records. This label, formed in 2021, is a charity-focused organization based in Philly. They specialize in limited edition releases, with all proceeds going to the artists' chosen charities. Webb Chapel has chosen the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) as their beneficiary, supporting this no-kill shelter with their music.

Today, Webb Chapel dropped "Springtime," the first single from their upcoming album. The song is streaming on all major platforms, and it’s a deep dive into themes of life, death, and rebirth. Rachel Gordon, the band's vocalist and bassist, shared the inspiration behind the song. "When Zack [Claxton] sent over his home-recorded demo, it was already called 'Springtime.' This title made me think about life and renewal. Working as a grave gardener at Woodlands Cemetery, I thought a lot about Mary Brown and her garden. The lyrics are about imagining her as a full person with many roles in her life, hoping she's happy with her garden.”

"World Cup" marks a big change for Webb Chapel, shifting from a solo project to a full band effort. The album was recorded and mixed in just six days with engineer Dan Angel. Zack Claxton, the primary guitarist and songwriter, spoke about the recording process: "Being in the studio made us rework and refine our songs. It helped us find new creative possibilities."

The album features standout tracks like "Black Car" and "Springtime," showcasing Rachel Gordon's powerful vocals. The band is rounded out by Josh Lesser on guitar and Christian Millieux on drums, bringing together some of Philadelphia's best musical talents.

With "World Cup," Webb Chapel shows their growth from home recordings to focused studio sessions. This album highlights their creative energy and establishes them as a significant force in Philadelphia's music scene. Webb Chapel's latest work is a testament to their evolving sound, trust, and intuition, making them a standout in the local music community. Webb Chapel's lo-fi, experimental approach and their mix of introspection with intense musical energy can evoke a similar vibe to many of the bands mentioned aboved, especially the blend of urgency and depth in Webb Chapel’s sound, coupled with their thematic exploration of life, death, and renewal, might resonate with fans of Sonic Youth who appreciate music that challenges conventions and offers something raw and authentic.
